Great Spirit Katsina by Gary Largo (Navajo-Hopi)
Vintage Navajo “Eagle Dancer” Kachina Signed G. Largo 1980s
Native American Eagle (Kwahu) Kachina dances to increase the number of eagles and is a spiritual figure to the Hopi. He is treated with honor at all times as, among other responsibilities, the Eagle is the messenger between the people and their spirit guides. This is a wonderful Kachina that is created in a style that is unusual today. Very few of the artists make the Native American dolls this way. The action is wonderful and the carving, painting and details are very accurate. Rare to find a Gary Largo who carves on one foot standing eagle.

Hopi Katsinam are crafted to acknowledge celestial beings, significant animals to the Hopi people, and the ancestors who help with their harvest, raising their spirits as well as raising their children. The Hopi people believe that the Katsina dancers possess supernatural powers, though they are men from the village wearing masks and feathered costumes.
